Details from the garden of Vicino Orsini (1523-83).
‘Where Caprarola, Villa Lante, Villa d’Este and other grand Renaissance gardens presented expensive statuary, exotic plants and elaborate hydraulics in pleasing geometric designs, Orsini subverted ideas of order and harmony. Instead, he created a wilderness set in a densely wooded ravine, with paths rising, labyrinth-like, through a nightmare landscape, to culminate in a classical chapel surrounded by an open meadow…By describing his garden as a sacro bosco Orsini placed it in the Roman tradition of sacred groves dedicated to pagan gods…[Jessie Sheeler suggests] that it presents a Manichean dialogue between good and evil, reality and illusion, love and lust, life and death.’
(Katie Campbell, review of The Garden at Bomarzo: A Renaissance Riddle, The Art Book)
I love this place. There is nothing to be compared to standing in that mouth! :D
